Future Public Spaces – Sweden

How can future public spaces facilitate new forms of social interaction?

From The Connectors Society archive – A design competition created by Julieta Talavera

The way we spend time and the things we spend time doing are constantly changing. New technologies enable us to interact in different ways. They also tend to replace older forms of social interaction for better or worse. How can future public spaces facilitate new forms of social interaction?

The Connectors Society in collaboration with STPLN are honored to present the Future Public Spaces challenge.

We are curious about where the future of public space lies and how it fits into our fast-paced, ever evolving society. So, we are calling on artists, designers, architects, makers and creative souls to submit a proposal on how you imagine future public space.

This is not the future we want.
This is the future we fear.
Think of it as a warning.

Spending time doing things, going on adventures, not knowing what to expect. I predict that the future of public space will go towards being more abstract, letting the user decide how to use it, by exploring it. Both alone and together with other people, interacting with the people around you doing the same thing.

To achieve that, a closed room, a ladder, no entry and a roof with a surprise. The wood panel on the outside creates a trellis, which makes you curious of what’s inside, and invites you to come closer. It forces you to crawl under it to discover. Grass on the roof shows the effect green spaces have on us and that most urban spaces lack it. I hope this building will bring people together, make them talk.
